Application for registration: which details and proofs the ordinance requires

In short: The application for registration is filed with the competent registration authority. It must state the keeper data, the motor liability insurance data and, where applicable, the use of the vehicle. The registration certificate part II must be presented. Which documents belong to the application?

The registration certificate part II must be presented with the application. If it does not yet exist, its issue is applied for.

If the vehicle was imported from a state outside the EU and the EEA, proof of customs clearance must be presented. If it is missing, the registration authority informs the competent main customs office of the registration.

Which proofs does a first registration need?

  • vehicle with EU type approval: the certificate of conformity,
  • vehicle with national type approval: the registration certificate part II with the type code entered, or the data confirmation,
  • vehicle with individual approval: the certificate of the individual vehicle approval.

Proof of EU type approval is deemed provided once the authority has retrieved the certificate of conformity data from the central database of the Federal Motor Transport Authority using the vehicle identification number.

Which vehicle data is added?

  • the use of the vehicle, for example as a taxi, hire car or for self-drive rental,
  • name and address of the person entitled to dispose of the registration certificate part II,
  • insurer, number of the insurance confirmation and start of insurance cover,
  • name and address of an authorised recipient or representative.

Which technical data does the authority require?

Where it is not contained in the documents presented, further vehicle data must be stated. This includes vehicle class and body type, make, type and trade name, the vehicle identification number and the date of first registration.

If vehicle data is missing, the authority may request a report from an officially recognised expert or a designated technical service.

What applies when a new vehicle is acquired from another EU state?

For the intra-Community acquisition of new motor vehicles, additional data for the tax authorities must be stated. This includes name and address of the supplier, the day of delivery, the day of first entry into service and the mileage on the day of delivery.

What does this mean for dealers?

Complete details in the application are the basis for the entries in the vehicle registers.
