Every registration leaves data in two registers. This page sums up what the German Vehicle Registration Ordinance of 2023 prescribes in § 57 to § 60.
Zevra is the B2B platform for digital vehicle registration for car dealers, registration services and fleets: cases are entered in the dealer portal and filed nationwide by power of attorney with qualified electronic signature – from €10 per registration, no base fee, no minimum volume.

Which two vehicle registers are there?
| Register | Kept by | Basis |
|---|---|---|
| Central Vehicle Register | Federal Motor Transport Authority | § 57 FZV |
| Local vehicle register | registration authority | § 58 FZV |
The registration authority transmits the vehicle data and the keeper data to the Federal Motor Transport Authority without delay.
Which vehicle data is stored?
The list for the Central Vehicle Register runs to number 34. It includes:
- district code, identification number and date of allocation of the plate,
- month and year of the next general inspection or safety inspection,
- date of deregistration and expiry of the plate reservation,
- number and security code of the registration certificate part II,
- security codes and print numbers of the registration stickers,
- motor liability insurance data including former insurers,
- notes on vehicle defects and significant damage from a road accident,
- former number plates and vehicle identification numbers.
Which keeper data is stored?
The keeper data from the registration application is stored and, on a change of keeper, the data of the buyer. In addition, the date of every change to the keeper data is recorded.
For self-employed keepers, data on profession or trade is added. Both registers also store the data of former keepers and their number.
What is stored for special plates?
- seasonal plate: the operating period,
- historic vehicle plate, plate for electrically powered vehicles and interchangeable plate: a note on the type of plate,
- green plate: a note and the date of allocation,
- red plate and short-term plate: allocation, date and period of validity.
What is different with internet-based registration?
For an internet-based application the Central Vehicle Register stores the application number and the fact that the application was filed online. For internet-based deregistration its date takes the place of the date on which the stickers were removed.
If the general inspection is proven by check digit, the register also stores the data transmitted for that purpose.
What does this mean for dealers?
Keeper data, insurance data and number plate from the application go into both registers.
With Zevra dealers enter these details once in the dealer portal. Registration costs from €10 per case, deregistration €2 net, plus official fees.
