Certificate of destruction (Verwertungsnachweis): scrapping and deregistering a car

In short: The certificate of destruction (Verwertungsnachweis) is mandatory when a vehicle of class M1, N1 or L5e has been handed to a recognised facility for recycling. The previous keeper or owner then has the vehicle deregistered without delay and hands over registration certificate part I and part II. If this is missing, the authority calls in the documents with a deadline of 4 weeks. With Zevra, deregistration costs from €2 per case.

Accident-damaged and end-of-life vehicles in the trade often end up at the recycler. All details come from § 17 of the Vehicle Registration Ordinance (FZV).

Zevra is the B2B platform for digital vehicle registration for car dealers, registration services and fleets: cases are entered in the dealer portal and filed nationwide by power of attorney with qualified electronic signature – from €10 per registration, no base fee, no minimum volume.

The condition is that the vehicle has been handed to a facility recognised under the End-of-Life Vehicle Ordinance for recycling.

The registration authority checks the details in the certificate and returns it; it withdraws and destroys the registration certificates.

What applies to recycling in another EU country?

If the vehicle remains in another member state or contracting state for disposal, the same applies. The German certificate is replaced by the certificate of destruction issued under Directive 2000/53/EC on end-of-life vehicles.

What happens if the certificate is not presented?

If the previous keeper or owner does not meet these duties, the registration authority calls in the registration certificate in the Verkehrsblatt with a deadline of 4 weeks. When the call expires without result, the vehicle's registration ends.

What does deregistration cost officially?

Under the fee schedule deregistration costs 15.90 euros at the counter and 2.10 euros online.

What does this mean for the dealership?

In the Zevra dealer portal you enter the recycler's facility number and the issue date of the certificate of destruction when deregistering.

With Zevra, registration costs from €10, deregistration from €2 per case, net and plus official fees.
