Export is everyday business in the used-car trade. One question decides: does the vehicle cross the border under its own power – or is it loaded?
Zevra is the B2B platform for digital vehicle registration for car dealers, registration services and fleets: cases are entered in the dealer portal and filed nationwide by power of attorney with qualified electronic signature – from €10 per registration, no base fee, no minimum volume.

Own power or transporter – which route fits?
| Route | What is needed | Competent |
|---|---|---|
| Vehicle drives abroad itself | Export plates under § 45 FZV | local registration authority |
| Vehicle is loaded (truck, ship, container) | Deregistration stating “export” | possible digitally via i-Kfz |
| Buyer collects with foreign registration | Deregistration; plates of the destination country | possible digitally via i-Kfz |
For deregistration the security codes of registration certificate part I and the stickers are enough – no identification of the keeper is required.
What does § 45 FZV require for export plates?
- Proof of third-party insurance for the export by an insurance confirmation under Annex 16.
- The registration is limited to the duration of this insurance, at most 1 year.
- The next roadworthiness test must be due after the expiry date – otherwise the test must be carried out beforehand.
- Registration certificate part I is restricted to the export and carries the expiry date.
- In addition an international registration certificate can be issued.
What do export plates look like?
They consist of the distinguishing sign of the registration district and a number made up of a one- to four-digit figure followed by a letter. The plate also carries the expiry date of the registration. After this date the vehicle may no longer be driven on public roads in Germany.
What applies to a vehicle that is still registered?
- Allocation is applied for at the registration authority – with the registration certificate and the previous plates for removal of the stickers.
- The authority withdraws the previous registration certificate part I.
- Registration certificate part II is updated.
What does Zevra handle for export?
At Zevra you deregister export vehicles digitally and choose “export” as the reason in the case – €2 net per deregistration, €0 base fee, confirmation online immediately. Export plates are not part of the offer; they are applied for at the registration authority. For dealers who load vehicles, digital deregistration is the complete procedure.
